Let’s be completely honest for a second: being in your third trimester during a North Alabama summer is an athletic feat all on its own.

When the Tennessee Valley humidity hits 90% and the air feels thick enough to chew, the absolute last thing you probably want to do is put on a dress, fix your hair, and stand in a field while trying to look gracefully expectant. You’re worried about sweat stains, swelling, and quite frankly, just passing out from the heat.

I hear you. Your feelings are 100% valid.

But here is the good news: you don’t have to skip capturing this magic phase of your life just because the calendar says July. You just need a photographer who knows how to game the Huntsville climate.

Here is exactly how we are going to pull off a stunning, glowing, and—most importantly—comfortable summer maternity photoshoot without you melting into the pavement.

1. The Strict "7:00 PM Only" Rule

If a photographer asks you to meet at 4:30 PM in July or August for an outdoor shoot, run. That is peak heat index time.

For summer sessions, I am incredibly strict about timing. We don’t start shooting until roughly 45 to 60 minutes before the sun dips below the horizon. Not only does this save you from the brutal midday heat, but it’s also when we get Huntsville’s best "golden hour" light—that soft, dreamy, orange glow that flatters everyone and hides a multitude of sweat drops.

2. Chasing Huntsville’s Microclimates

Location choice is everything when it’s hot. An open, unshaded field in Madison is going to act like an oven. Instead, we chase local spots that offer natural air conditioning:

  • The Monte Sano Canopy: Heading up the mountain to Monte Sano State Park can sometimes give us a blessed 4-to-5-degree temperature drop compared to downtown. Deep in the shaded woods, we get beautiful filtered light without direct sun beating down on you.
  • The Flint River Dip: Want something a little more adventurous and incredibly cooling? We can head toward the Flint River for a creek-side session where you can literally stand ankle-deep in the cool water. It photographs beautifully and keeps your body temperature down.

"When you come to your shoot, pretend we are going on a mini-hike. Bring a cooler with ice-cold water, a handheld battery-operated fan (I bring one too!), and a pack of oil-absorbing blotting papers for quick makeup touch-ups between poses."

3. The "Anti-Gown" Summer Styling

You do not have to wear a heavy, multi-layered tulle or velvet maternity gown to look stunning. In the summer, heavy fabrics are your enemy.

Instead, I love guiding my summer moms toward high-end, breathable fabrics like linen, lightweight cotton, or silk slip dresses. A chic, oversized linen button-down paired with simple maternity denim or a lightweight maxi dress looks effortlessly modern, editorial, and allows the evening breeze to actually reach your skin.

4. The Ultimate Safety Net: Skipping the Outdoors Entirely

If the thought of being outside in the Alabama humidity makes you want to cry, here is your permission slip to skip it completely. You do not have to shoot outdoors to get breathtaking, fine-art maternity images.

Opting for an indoor studio maternity session gives us total control over the environment. No bugs, no wind, no unpredictable summer thunderstorms, and most importantly: blasting air conditioning.

We can rent a gorgeous, natural-light studio space here in Huntsville (like the stunning historic windows at Lowe Mill or a minimalist local creative studio). Studio sessions allow for a much more intimate, editorial style—think chic maternity portraits against a clean backdrop, beautiful shadows across your belly, and a relaxed environment where you can easily change outfits without hiding in a car.
